Have You Ever Been to Middelfart, Denmark?
More Towns with Ridiculous Names
Think the United States has a corner on the market of towns with ridiculous, funny, weird, and downright offensive names? Think again. Even the most "refined" countries of Europe have towns with some of the most offensive names. The most offensive name for a European city will not be included in this list, but I will tell you that it starts with an "F" and ends with a "g" with five letters in between that include, in no particular order: "c", "n", "u", "i", and "k". If you are interested, this town can be found in Austria. For now, here are another fifteen towns with some of the most humorous names from around the globe.
Middelfart, Denmark
The town of Middelfart, Denmark is actually a larger community than most of the towns previously list. Literally translated Middelfart means "central passage" and the name comes from the fact that because it was one of three towns that provided ferry service from the island of Funen to the peninsula of Jutland.
Zap, North Dakota
Zap, North Dakota was found in 1913 along the North Pacific Railway and has a population of around 250 people. There are several stories regarding the origins of the name but none are considered the official origin of the name.
No Name, Colorado
No Name, Colorado can be found west of Denver along Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The origin of the town lies in its location, the unincorporated area lies between No Name Canyon and No Name Creek. The town received its name when the Colorado Department of Transportation was improving the signage along the interstate, when a CDOT employee noticed that there was no sign for Exit 119 he simply wrote "no name" on the map to indicate that there was no name for that exit. Ta-da.
Shitterton, Dorset England
Shitterton, Dorset England is a small town between Poole and Dorchester in the district of Dorset in England. There appears to be no real story surrounding the origin of the name but Shitterton has been honored at number nine on the list of the rudest town names in Britain. Number nine? I have looked at some of the eight considered to be more rude and I can tell you that they are far more unpublishable than Shitterton.
Bacon, Indiana
I know that Bacon, Indiana is not necessarily at home on this list but dammit, I really like bacon. So a town named Bacon has got to be fantastic, I may have found my future home.
Beaver Lick, Kentucky
I don't mean to continually include the great Commonwealth of Kentucky on my lists but they sure do make it easy for me to compile these things. Beaver Lick, Kentucky is just another in a looooooong list of towns in Kentucky with names that make me laugh. This particular gem is located in the extreme north of Kentucky, quite a distance from Monkey's Eyebrow and Possum Trot, and like most of them I cannot find a story to relay the origin of this particular name. If you're gonna name a town Beaver Lick, there had better be a story behind it.
Wetwang, Yorkshire England
We go back across the pond for this one, Wetwang, Yorkshire England which I do not believe requires any further explanation.
Hygiene, Colorado
The name of this town, Hygiene, Colorado, harkens back to a simpler time; a time when the location was used as sanitarium for patients with Tuberculosis during the 1800's. The town of Hygiene has a post office and an elementary school and is now primarily known for the preservation of the Brethren Church (pictured above).
Blue Ball, Ohio
If you're looking for a place to blow-off some steam, or maybe a place to release some pent up pressure (I'm sorry I couldn't help myself), Blue Ball, Ohio might just be the place for you. Originally called Guilford, Ohio the town changed its name because at the time the town was a stage stop on the road between Cincinnati and Dayton. This was due to the fact that, allegedly, the stage drivers were apparently illiterate and often missed the stop. To counter this the town changed its name to reflect a local monument, a blue sphere that hung at the intersection of the two main roads in the town.
Virginville, Pennsylvania
More in line with Pennsylvania's Quaker roots than the previously listed Intercourse, Pennsylvania; Virginville, Pennsylvania evidently got its name from the "untouched" beauty of the surrounding countryside....Right. Of course it was. Where was my head?
I hope that I have proven my point, that the United States does not have a corner on the market with regards to towns with downright silly names, although there does seem to be a disproportionate amount here than anywhere else...dammit Kentucky! I hope to keep you further entertained with another in this series very soon...stay tuned.
